What staying at Hamilton Cove is actually like
Posted on January 15, 2026 by CatalinaHoliday.com
Most people looking at Hamilton Cove vacation rentals have already decided on Catalina. They want Avalon without sleeping above a bar on Crescent. Fair enough. Hamilton Cove sits just outside town — gated villas on the hillside above a small cove — and it feels more like a quiet condo resort than a hotel strip.

I’m Rimas. We rent a few places here through Catalina Holiday. This isn’t a brochure. It’s the stuff guests ask us before they book.
Getting there
You don’t drive onto Catalina. Catalina Express (Long Beach, San Pedro, and seasonally other ports) drops you in Avalon. From the boat, Hamilton Cove is a short ride — golf cart if your rental includes one, taxi, or the hotel shuttle some people arrange ahead. Bags are real. Pack like you’re flying, not like you’re loading an SUV for a weekend in Palm Springs.
If your ferry is late or the wind’s up, build slack into check-in. The island runs on island time whether you planned for it or not.

The gate, the cart, the quiet
Hamilton Cove is gated. Guests get access for their stay. Inside you’ll find the usual resort pieces: pool, spa, gym, tennis, a putting course — what your specific villa includes can vary, so read the listing. A lot of our stays include an electric golf cart. That’s the difference between “we went into town twice” and “we rolled down for dinner without thinking about it.” Avalon’s hills are no joke on foot after a full day.
It is quieter than downtown Avalon at night. That’s the point. If you want bar noise until 1 a.m., book on Crescent. If you want to hear the water and go to bed early, this end of the island fits better.
What’s different about the villas

What’s different about these Hamilton Cove vacation rentals is that they’re real condo units — kitchens, balconies you actually use, space to make breakfast or pack a beach cooler. You’re not fighting three elevators for ice. Avalon restaurants are good; they’re also busy on holiday weekends, so having a kitchen matters.

Views matter here. Some units face more open water; others look into the cove. Ask if that distinction matters to you. Photos help, but sun angle and fog are Catalina’s co-hosts. June gloom is real. October can be gorgeous. Check the week you’re traveling instead of assuming “Southern California = guaranteed sun.”

HOA rules (read this once)
Hamilton Cove has association rules. Pets generally aren’t allowed and the HOA is strict about animals on the property. Parties and overcrowding get people in trouble. We book for the guest count on the reservation. If you’re planning a big group celebration, talk to us first; a quiet villa isn’t the right shell for that.
Town is still close
You’re not marooned. Golf cart into Avalon for the pier, Descanso, shops, and dinner. Day trips and water stuff are the same as for any Avalon stay — you’re just sleeping somewhere calmer. JazzTrax and big event weekends fill the island; book earlier than you think if your dates land on those.
How we rent
Browse Hamilton Cove vacation rentals on catalinaholiday.com, or email [email protected] with your dates and how many people. Tell us if you need a cart, a one-bedroom vs two, or a single night when the calendar only has a gap. We open singles sometimes when two nights aren’t available — not always, and HOA rules still apply.
If you’ve stayed in Avalon hotels before and want a kitchen and a quieter night, Hamilton Cove is usually the upgrade people mean when they say they want “the other side of the island” without leaving Avalon behind.
